Thought for the Day – Staying Sane in a Mad World #1
We live in a ‘secular soaked world’, a world where God is excluded and people are dehumanised – in all the discussions about this virus, amid all the concerns and fears – the God who knows all things and is present everywhere is never mentioned – and it’s a mad mad world because of that.
Our children, my grandchildren are growing up in an environment where Creationism is considered as wacky as people who think the Earth is flat. What is sometimes called the ‘Liberal Elite’ are so confident of their position they want to impose it on everyone. For example, they are even forcing abortion rights on Northern Ireland when the people there don’t want it.
It’s a mad world – because God – his name, his glory, his presence has been air-brushed from the media and our culture.
Over the next few days I want to try and redress the balance and look at some passages that will put God back in the centre stage and get some sanity back into our thinking and some humanity back into our living.
Today we start with Psalm 139 vs 1 6— read the whole Psalm if you can …
You have searched me, Lord,and you know me
You know when I sit and when I rise
you perceive my thoughts from afar
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways
Before a word is on my tongue
Lord, know it completely
You hem me in behind and before,
you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain
Lord, and you know me You know when I sit and when I rise you perceive my thoughts from afar. Did you know that God knows everything about you? As you walk the kids to school or travel to London, as you eat your dinner and watch TV, whoever you are, whatever you are doing? It blew David’s mind. Calvin says on this Psalm ‘David, so he may dismiss the deceptive coverings under which most men take refuge and to divest himself of all hypocrisy, insists at large on the truth that nothing can elude the divine observation’ So true – ponder on that for this today.
God’s presence is everywhere. God isn’t in isolation somewhere hiding away from the virus. God goes with us wherever we go and he is with us wherever we are – it blew David’s mind.
