Nahum 3 – Learning from history
As we conclude this prophecy about Nineveh we see the reality of God’s judgment. There are good reasons for it, it will expose our shame and shatter our trust in material things. These words had a fatal reality for the Assyrians. They are words of warning for us which drive us to Jesus Christ who suffered the judgment that we deserved. Nahum is written for Assyrians, for Israel and for us. It begins with great declarations about the character of God – his justice, his great power, and his determination to put an end to all who oppose him, but at the same time his patience and goodness in all he does. Not easy reading but Nahum does live up to his name – the LORD who comforts. Jesus ends this intimate prayer to his Father with some amazing words. He prays for people like us – people who believed because of the witness of the disciples. He prays we may be united with each other because we are united with the Father and the Son, and as a consequence the world will know the reality of the gospel. He then closes the prayer with a shockingly beautiful declaration that he actually wants us to be with him in glory, and to know God now in our daily lives as we experience his love.
