John 13:31 to 14:4 – Jesus’ Going

Posted by on 31st Oct, 2011 in Sermons | Tagged in: | 0 comments

Jesus was soon to die on the Cross.  He tells his disciples they must display a distinctive kind of love, modelled on his example and following his teaching.  This will be a powerful example to the world around them. Peter believes he can be a saviour for Jesus rather than the other way around.  We sometimes think we can save ourselves. Peter needed Jesus to go (to the Cross) to prepare a way for them.  He needed to trust in God rather than himself. So do we. Hebrews 10:26 to 39 – Persistent Faith

Posted by on 31st Oct, 2011 in Sermons | Tagged in: | 0 comments

Why do people give up following Jesus?  It must be that they no longer think he’s important.  It might be because something’s happened in their lives that they blame God for.  It might just be other things seem a lot more interesting or beneficial. In this text we see the Consequence of Persistent Sin. If you turn your back on Jesus, the only thing that can lead to is Judgment. But we also see the Reward for Persistent Faith. Jesus will come back to judge and save. To listen to Graham Nicholls preaching from Hebrews 10:26-39 at Christ Church on Sunday evening 30th October 2011 use the...

Don Carson. Grace Baptist Mission. Radio 4

Don Carson is not closely associated with the Grace Baptist scene in the UK and neither he, nor Grace Baptist Mission are firm favourites on Radio 4. Evangelical Christians are rarely given much air time – even on the Christian slots. So it was a delight when somone pointed out this gem. Here it is then: Don Carson on Radio 4’s morning worship at the Grace Baptist Mission celebration of their 150 year history on 30th Oct 2011. A transcript of the sermon is below but if you want to listen to the whole service online here’s the link. Link to BBC iPlayer (Don Carson sermon...

Dawkins Refusal to debate William Lane Craig

A couple of newspaper articles to do with Richard Dawkins refusing to debate with Bill Craig and another about discrimination against Christians. I guess the most depressing is the generally negative tone against Christianity in most of the comments. John 13:1 to 30 – Washing

Posted by on 24th Oct, 2011 in Sermons | Tagged in: | 0 comments

Jesus washing the disciples feet is a beautiful picture, but what does God want us to see in the picture?  We need to think about the context – the imminent death of Jesus; the love of Jesus and the sovereignty of Jesus. Then we can see that the washing was a demonstration of what was going to happen at the Cross.  The Cross would be a sovereign display of power in weakness; a sovereign sacrifice that cleanses completely; and a sovereign example for disciples to follow. Hebrews 10:19 to 25 – Encouragement: draw near confidently

Posted by on 17th Oct, 2011 in Sermons | Tagged in: | 0 comments

What keeps us going as believers?  What keeps us going through trials, through persecution, through just the every day toil and grind of life?  What keeps us believing, keeps us trusting? Last night as we continued our studies in Hebrews.  The writer of Hebrews in 10:19-25  gives us three encouragements to how to keep going. Firstly we are to continue to draw near to God.  As believers in Jesus we can keep on drawing near, not because we deserve to, not because we earned it but because of Jesus’ once for all sacrifice. His sacrifice has opened the way for us to enter the Most Holy...
